Ancient culture, modern progress:
Chinese Americans bring talents to Northeast Ohio
OCAGC Year in Review
Here are some highlights of OCAGC’s involvement in 2008:
- We participated along with St. Claire-Superior
Development Corp. on their Year of the Rat Public Art Celebration.
This collaboration involved members of the OCAGC organization
participating in several Year of the Rat sponsored Arts &
Culture Education classes. These classes combined Asian culture
with art projects, to expose and educate youth of the culture
as well as offer quality art classes. In addition to the Art &
Culture Education classes, OCAGC played a key role in having the
children’s art projects on display at Cleveland City Hall
during the month of May, 2008. The youth were also given the opportunity
to meet Mayor Frank Jackson, and have their picture taken with
him. Several OCAGC members participated, including Mr. Ray Hing.
- As a Solon resident, Mr. Ray Hing initiated a more in-depth
investigation/research on the Chinese shot by Police incident.
Founding report was later submitted to OCA National.
- OCAGC members among several Asian American organizations in
Ohio, including OCA Columbus’ chapter, worked together as
a strong voice in protest in the poor taste display of 2 cartoons
published at Plain Dealer and on web during the Earthquake in
China.
- We participated in fundraising for the victims in Sichuan Earthquake
and also appeared on WKYC Channel 3 asking for support.
- Mr. Ray Hing has opened a much better dialogue among OCAGC
and the Solon Chinese School, in hope that we can further work
together helping our community at large.
- OCAGC participated the Earthquake Relief Concert at CSU organized
by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, in partnership with
Cleveland State University and Tenax Corporation.
- OCAGC held our summer fundraising event with a great success
and sponsored by American Family Insurance, Charter One Bank,
St. Claire-Superior Development Corporation, El Sol de Cleveland
Hispanic Newspaper, and many others.
- Several OCAGC members attended at numerous events, including
Dr. Yachun Ku attendance as panelist on the Doing Business with
China event sponsored by Charter One Bank. Mr. Ray and Shan Chan
attendance of Health Coalition event in Columbus and an FBI Open
House event, and many of you also participated on a video shoot
for a locally based international company.
- OCAGC was there along the other A/PAF members celebrating Asian
Pacific Heritage Day at City Hall.
- OCAGC was at the ICC Summit and contributed some thoughts on
making Cleveland a better city for the diversity ethnic groups
and for immigrants.
- OCAGC members participated in election vote, trying to get
the Asian Americans in Cleveland to go out and vote.
- We salute Ms. Ying Pu and OCAGC current president Johnny Wu
for being the recipient of 2008 Community Relations Awards by
the Third District Police Department.
As you can see, we have been busy throughout 2008, and thanks
to our hard working OCAGC members, we are now moving toward an
outreach initiative, we felt this would greatly help the Asian/Pacific
Americans community at large.
First, we were awarded to host the National APA Entrepreneur
Empowerment Training Scholarship program for Spring of 2009 bringing
national attention to Cleveland.
OCAGC will work with the Association of Women’s Business
Centers’ member in Cleveland to publicize the program to
OCA national members and other members of the APA community in
the US.
The APA Entrepreneur Empowerment Training Scholarship provides
a limited number of full scholarships to APA entrepreneurs to
attend business start-up and development programs. The Scholarship
is designed for women and men who want to start a business or
expand an existing small business.
Secondaly, we are initiating our outreach project, which is IMAGE
TV Ohio, a tv magazine show either airing on WKYC or at Time Warner’s
Channel 218, the good thing about a visual programming is that,
it would help the viewers (reaching at least 928k household minimum
to 1.5million households) a better understanding on Asian Americans
and their cultures plus the immigrant as a whole.
For IMAGE TV Ohio, we definitely will need your support, not
only to provide us information on upcoming events so we can let
the viewers know (the magazine tv show ill reach at least 928,000
households at minimum to up to 1,500,000 households). We also
will have commercial spots available for anyone interested (reduced
rate), and finally, we are seeking underwriter to sponsor the
entire project. We have on-location Asian reporters available
for onsite coverage, we also have the support of local production
company to lend us a hand to make the project manageable and extremely
lost cost. More information will be provided on separately.
These two projects is just the beginning, and we hope everyone
will engage to help us, let’s get our Asian Pacific heritage
into the views of thousands so they can better understand our
culture!
